Course Overview

Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage Engineering Training Course

Introduction

Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) Engineering Training Course is designed to equip oil and gas professionals with advanced technical knowledge and practical skills in heavy oil recovery, oil sands development, thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR), reservoir engineering, and steam injection technology. This training course explores the fundamental principles of steam-assisted gravity drainage, including reservoir geology, thermal reservoir simulation, horizontal well-pair design, steam chamber development, heat transfer mechanisms, and multiphase fluid flow. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how steam injection reduces bitumen viscosity, improves oil mobility, and facilitates gravity-driven production through strategically positioned horizontal injection and production wells.

Participants will learn to evaluate reservoir heterogeneity, diagnose steam chamber irregularities, manage steam breakthrough, improve oil recovery factors, and reduce operating costs through data-driven production optimization. The training also examines emerging approaches such as solvent-assisted SAGD, hybrid thermal recovery, advanced surveillance technologies, and artificial intelligence for production forecasting. Through hands-on exercises, technical discussions, and real-world oil sands development scenarios, learners will develop the capabilities needed to improve SAGD project economics, operational reliability, environmental performance, and long-term reservoir productivity. By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to support integrated reservoir management, optimize thermal recovery strategies, and deliver sustainable value from heavy oil and bitumen assets.
